Character Name: Yuyuko Saigyouji
Canon: Touhou Project
Canon Background: Touhou is a big well of canon information for its characters, let me tell you
AU Background: The girl who bears witness to death; the tale of the young Saigyouji's fate is a sad one.
The tale truly begins with her father, a popular poet, whose most famous work declared that he wished to die beneath a sakura tree when it was in full bloom. Though he was famous, and the family rich and popular, Hoshi Saigyouji was a bit of an oddball. He had, at the time, decided to follow a very strict path to becoming a monk and decided to cut himself off of all worldly 'attachments', and thus abandoned his family and the then infant Yuyuko, leaving them with the wealth his popularity had accrued. With that, he went out to the largest, most beautiful sakura tree on the family's property, laid beneath its branches, and died.
But though he had abandoned his family and renounced all connection to everything in the world, that didn't mean they were not still connected to him, and from then on, strange things began to happen. The cherry tree he had died beneath began to gain popularity as a place for those who felt their lives were at their end to come, and visitors from all over would follow in his footsteps, laying beneath the huge tree's branches and breathing their last. This began to give the tree a strange ability, indeed. Even though people were already attracted to it as a place to go to have their peaceful final slumber, the tree itself began to develop the ability to entice people to come to it and die, and thus people who might not have normally tried to sleep beneath its branches would lay down and it would suck their lives right out.
About the same time that happened, the family of the young Yuyuko began to notice she would speak to herself, or stare at the tree for long hours at a time. They began to think she was cursed in some way, that the tree itself had cursed her. In truth, the girl had always had a spiritual sense, and the many ghosts of the people that died around the tree, as well as their unfulfilled desires, especially the evil ones, gathered around her because of that ability.
The family began to limit the amount of people that could come to see the tree, but by that point it was too late. The tree had become something of a spirit itself - an 'Ayakashi' as they called it in those days - and as its power grew, the amount of spirits grew and, in a twist of fate, the girl's own spiritual and magical power grew. And it grew to be the same one as the tree: Yuyuko began to be able to invoke death in anyone not powerful enough to resist her, which, given the lack of magical powers in the people she was surrounded by, was quite a few.
As she became older, the power became more powerful; and she began to lose control over her abilities, killing people randomly though she rarely ever meant to. The family began to see fit to isolate the two cursed beings - the girl and the tree. They built a small compound around the tree, enclosing it in walls with a house nearby, then left the girl there. They began to seek help, from those with knowledge of supernatural phenomenon and crystals, to try to seal the tree and the power in the girl, but by that point... no one could get close enough to her to try anything without dying, themselves.
And so there she remained, cut off from the world, living a lonely existence in a comfortable but empty house.
Until the day a trespasser, so enamored with the concept of the Saigyou Ayakashi, scaled the walls of the compound and laid to die beneath the tree's branches, and dropped a crystal as he did.
Personality: Since this is Yuyuko pre-death, there's a bit of adjustment to make. She is not an airheaded ghost with a surprisingly perceptive side this time around...
The first and most noticeable thing is that the girl is depressed. Technically, it's a terminal illness with her, as in canon she killed herself and became a ghost... and the seal on the Saigyou Ayakashi. Since this is before that whole death thing, she's instead very, very depressed. She hates her power, she hates killing people, and she hates, more than anything, that she has a hard time controlling it. Not only does she hate it, really, but it literally terrifies her. She willingly keeps herself secluded in that house; there's nothing actually forcing her to stay there, but that still doesn't mean that occasionally people won't try to force their way to the tree in order to die, or that sometimes she won't get visitors from the servants of her house or her own family members.
Every life she takes weighs very heavily on her.
She will act somewhat jaded about it, however. She's seen so much death, so much killing, and been so responsible for it, that though inside killing yet another person makes her die a little bit inside herself, she doesn't immediately outwardly act like it, and there's definitely a part of her that she had to make numb so she could continue on forward.
The older she gets, however, the closer she comes to breaking from that pressure. And it does show.
That's not to say she's evil at all. Quite the opposite, though she's so closely connected to the Saigyou Ayakashi, she is an extremely gentle, soft-spoken young woman with a pleasant, if rather shy demeanor. She's terrified of rocking the boat, or getting into a situation where she kills innocent people. Bad anxiety issues do show in tandem with her depression (which is sort of a catch-22: she makes her power run rampant because she's so anxious about not hurting people when she is around them), but she does everything she can to swallow them and try to keep people from worrying too much about her.
She took after her father as a poet, and spends a lot of her spare time reading as many books as she can rightfully get her hands on, as well as writing. The poetic nature extends to her speech, as well, and she speaks in a way that almost sounds like a poem written to be verbalized. She's notably quite good at it.
Her 'perceptive' side is also a lot more obvious when alive than in canon, and she does have some decent insight, and can and will be rather frank about what she sees, rather than hiding it behind double-talk and mystery. It's not out of cruelty; there's probably not a single mean bone in her body, she just doesn't feel the need to lie. But then, with her ability, she doesn't need to be mean to intimidate people.
Furthermore, one of the ways she keeps herself calm is by making tea. She actually is quite good at making an excellent cup of tea to whoever she's serving it for's tastes. Too bad she doesn't get too many visitors to demonstrate her skill to.
Finally, she is very, very lonely. Though she willingly keeps herself isolated from the world, due to necessity, it doesn't mean she doesn't suffer the loneliness of it. There is nothing more she wants than to be able to talk to people normally and not be worried about killing them. But she can't do that at this stage in her life. It feeds the anxiety and depression problems.
Combat Style: Yuyuko has probably the single most frightening ability: she has the ability to invoke death in mortals. That is, unless someone has a reasonably high luck, defense against instant death, or is immortal, they are in serious danger of her just dropping them on the spot. She cannot control the power fully, and it will manifest most often when she is upset or stressed, so being careful around her is usually the best way to do it. She cannot do it to anyone not within actual visual range of her, so she can't just wish someone dead halfway across the planet, and the power wanes in large groups pretty significantly, but one-on-one, her power is a frightening one to come up against.
The good news is she keeps herself secluded, and so it's not as though she'll actively seek out people to harm. She doesn't fight unless her own life is depending on it, in fact she hates conflict and avoids it whenever necessary, especially since anything that upsets her could cause someone to die. She is not a warrior, she has little interest in battle and politics, and killing people causes her great distress so she tries very hard not to do it... ever. She wants simply to live peacefully.
Physically speaking, she's somewhat scrawny and rather frail, and also has no combat training. So if you can get close enough to her without her (or the spirits that gather around her) noticing an intent to harm her, she's actually not all that well-defended.
Though, because of her ability to invoke death, trying to turn the same thing on her is not nearly as effective, and her magical resistance is somewhat high.
She can also speak to dead spirits, and tends to be surrounded by them, so people afraid of ghosts may want to watch out. They are also useful as a warning for people with the intent to harm her or the tree, so especial care will need to be taken to get past them without her noticing.

Title: N/A.All of her Touhou titles refer to her being a ghost l-lol
Artifacts: By technicality she's connected intrinsically to the Saigyou Ayakashi. It's a tree that can entice people to fall asleep at its roots and then suck the life out of them, killing them. It's definitely an evil presence, and doesn't discriminate victims.
It's also a tree and rooted to the ground so unless you go to it, there's no way it's going anywhere to cause havoc. It's semi-sentient only in that it actively attracts people with the intent to kill, but it can't speak or communicate more than that.
It's also very, very difficult to kill the tree, even through traditional means. It will need a very, very strong seal to stop it.
Setting Considerations: ^ See 'Saigyou Ayakashi' above. It's located in her family's compound so there's really nothing hugely world-building that's required of it. It's not going anywhere, but it can be used for plots if people want to come to it.
Notes: Her death power is kind of hax but she isn't going to be getting into any major conflicts unless someone purposefully drags her into it (hence why she doesn't consider herself affiliated with any major kingdom; she doesn't want to be honor-bound to try to fight for them), then they deserve what happens afterward.
